A Dutch Food Manufacturer Required a Hygienic Floor

Problem
A globally renowned food processing company urgently required a new, hygienic flooring solution for two kitchens at its production area in Elst in the Netherlands. Open joints were present throughout the factory’s old tile floors, causing leakage to the substrate and risking contamination and structure degradation. Not only did the company desire floors of the highest performance calibre but they also needed to work with a flooring company that could provide a quick turnaround to minimize production downtime.
Solution
Stonhard implemented a comprehensive overhaul, replacing the previous steel-reinforced concrete and hexagon tiles with the Stonclad UT system. This textured urethane mortar flooring delivered a seamless, slip-resistant, and chemical-resistant surface capable of withstanding thermal shock and intense cleaning routines. The incorporation of the durable Stonclad UR integral cove base further ensured a seamless transition between the floor and wall, effectively eradicating problematic corners and crevices prone to accumulating dirt, grime and bacteria, thereby promoting superior hygiene.
The project commenced with the careful dismantling of the old tiles and subfloor, ensuring a clean foundation for the new installation. Waterproofing measures, including the application of the ME7 membrane around drains, fortified against moisture intrusion, while the Stonclad UR integral cove base facilitated a smooth floor-to-wall transition, crucial for compliance with rigorous HACCP standards. Additionally, floor levelling and reinforcement were executed using Stonset TG6 and Stonproof RH7 to achieve an even surface optimised for drainage and enhanced structural resilience. The Stonclad UT system was then applied, boasting a slip-resistant, chemical-resistant, and seamless finish capable of withstanding thermal shock and intensive cleaning, culminating in a medium-textured surface protected by a durable coat of Stonseal UT7 in a customised colour. Finally, Stonflex MP7 was employed around drains and expansion joints to ensure the floor’s integrity to support natural movements.
